For nearly 75 years, Archway® has shared in the simple traditions of families across America by providing a variety of freshly-baked cookies.
Under the ownership of Lance Mfg, LLC., Archway’s great-tasting, freshly-baked cookies are made with the same classic recipes used by generations of Archway master bakers. Today, Archway cookies are still made with pride at the Archway bakery in Ashland, Ohio.
As the Archway brand has grown over the years, the passion and commitment to baking delicious cookies remains. Follow the journey of Archway Bakeries Co.:
- A husband and wife team began baking soft oatmeal cookies and doughnuts in their garage in Battle Creek, Mich., in 1936.
- With baking ingredients in short supply during World War II, the family concentrated exclusively on baking cookies, which came to be known as Swanson Homestyle Cookies. By the late 1940s the company expanded to 15 different varieties.
- Due to the increased national exposure, the brand name was changed to Archway in the 1950s since the Swanson name was already recognized with a popular brand of frozen dinners.
- As the Archway brand continued to grow, the company became known for the quality of its soft-baked cookies along with its additional holiday cookie varieties, marketed primarily during the holiday season.
- As Americans grew more health conscious in the 1980s, Archway responded to consumer concerns by removing saturated fat from all of the company’s products. Archway later introduced a line of fat-free and sugar-free cookies.
- Over the years, ownership of the Archway brand continued to change hands several times. In October 2008 the company was put into bankruptcy by its owners at that time, bringing uncertainty to the Ashland community.
- In December 2008, Lance, Inc., purchased the Archway brand and its Ashland bakery at a bankruptcy auction, bringing hope back to the Ashland community and the promise of keeping Archway brand cookies available for cookie enthusiasts.
